Heritage town status for Taiping

TOURISM POTENTIAL: Move to ensure its rich historical and heritage treasures are preserved

TAIPING: PLANS are in the pipeline to turn the town here, which is rich in tourism products, especially old and historical treasures, into a Permanent Heritage Town.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said his ministry would hold discussions with the Perak government to ensure that all the historical and heritage treasures here were preserved as tourism icons.
"We want to ensure these treasures are protected, especially from development projects.

"Some of them are not well maintained and left to rot," he said after opening the Muzium Bersama Komuniti programme at Perak Museum here yesterday.
Nazri cited the museum and Taiping Zoo, which are the oldest museum and zoo in the country, and the Night Safari as examples of tourism products that needed upgrading, not only to draw tourists but to preserve them as national tourism icons.

"The ministry will consider and approve a suitable amount to preserve the historical and heritage values of Taiping as part of its plans to usher in Visit Malaysia Year 2014."
Nazri added that he was satisfied with the exhibits and artefacts in the museum.

He also said he planned to travel to several locations in the country to find out what were the tourism products that could be further developed.
The two-day Muzium Bersama Komuniti programme, which ends today, features 47 exhibition booths offering various tourism, health and souvenir products and a host of traditional performances.
