- A new highway will be built linking Ipoh and Selama at the border of Perak and Kedah, said Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

He said the 85km highway costing RM2.5 billion would be built by a local company, Beta Mutiara Technologies (BMT) Jelas Sdn Bhd.

The three-lane highway, which will begin at Jelapang, will have exits at Sungai Siput, Karai, Kati, Anak Kurau, Batu Kurau and ends at Selama, he told reporters after witnessing the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between BMT Jelas and Elaf Bank of Bahrain here Tuesday.

He said the project would be funded through the distribution of sukuk by Elaf Bank.

The highway will be connected to Serdang and the Kulim-Sungai Petani Highway which is also being built by the company, he added.

Zambry said BMT Jelas was now in the final stages of preparing documents for the construction of the highway before getting the approval from the Works Ministry and the Finance Ministry.

Present were BMT Jelas managing director Datuk Bahadun Ariffin, Elaf Bank chairman Ebrahim Al Khuzam and its chief executive officer Jamil Jaroudi.
