Cycling the globe - back to his hometown in Taiping

July 4, 2008 Cycling the globe

LAW TZUO HANN decided to cycle from all the way in Los Angeles, California, back to his hometown in Taiping, Perak, last year. The 23-year-old adventurer is working on a book that chronicles his journey across the globe. He shares his pictures from the journey with R.AGE

I WAS just sitting down having a burger one day, when I started wondering what it would be like to cycle around the world.

And although I didn't know where to start (and worried about the perils of being on the road all alone), I kept thinking about it. So I worked and saved up some money, taught myself to fix things, bought a bike and all the necessary gears and instruments I would need for the trip, as well as a plane ticket.

As I flew across the seas from the United States to Ireland, I looked out of the window and wondered if I would ever see my family again. Yes, I was still afraid. I could have given up there and then, but just shook it off and went on with my journey.

Now, I've visited 20 countries in over three continents. I crossed four desserts and countless mountains. It was hard work, all 28,571km of it. But that was a real once-in-a-lifetime experience for me, and now, I am home and ready for other things.
