KUALA LUMPUR, 22 FEBRUARY 2010 -- Malaysia-based mobile provider DiGi Telecommunications has speeded up its Turbo 3G network rollout in Malaysia with a further expansion worth US$29.4 million (RM100 million).

DiGi chief executive officer Jonathan Dennelind said the company has further broadened its Turbo 3G network and made its mobile Internet services available in Ipoh, Perak and Kuching, Sarawak today. “We will invest US$29.4 [RM100] million to support rapid expansion in both states over the next three years.”

“With population coverage of 68 per cent in Ipoh and 45 per cent in Kuching at launch, DiGi will be increasing the percentage of coverage to 98 per cent and 55 per cent in both cities respectively by March 2010,” said Dennelind.

“Progressive plans are also underway to widen DiGi’s Turbo 3G coverage in other towns such as Taiping, Kamunting and Kampar in Perak and Miri in Sarawak by the second half of 2010,” he said.

According to Dennelind, DiGi currently has more than 500,000 cumulative 3G mobile Internet customers, out of which around 10 per cent are mobile broadband customers.

Mobile Internet access to the people

“We are serious about our ambition to bring Internet access to the people. As such, we have accelerated our rollout to make our mobile Internet services available in five states within the short span of a year,” said Dennelind.

“DiGi already has 29 per cent population coverage in Malaysia to date and we now plan to make our mobile Internet services available in more than three new market centres this year, with Johor Bahru as the next launch location,” he said.

He said in addition to Perak and Sarawak, DiGi today has almost 100 per cent population coverage of Kota Kinabalu and 70 per cent of both the Klang Valley and Penang.

“While we grow our Turbo 3G presence in more locations, we remain focused on delivering quality and best value services,” said Dennelind. “Customers today demand better Internet speeds for less, a proposition which has become synonymous with DiGi’s mobile Internet services, enabling customers to surf at ease and with peace of mind knowing they won’t be overcharged. This has contributed to the steady increase of our subscriber base.”
