International Association of Peace Messenger Cities

1. The Association is established to encourage cities to help create a culture of peace and has as it aims:

• to promote understanding between peoples
• to enable the promotion of solidarity between them
• to spread the spirit of peace, tolerance and mutual respect
• to promote efforts aimed at combating wars, hunger and natural disasters
• to ensure that governments understand that nuclear disarmament is a primary necessity, as are the protection of human rights, liberty and the free movement of individuals.

2. It shall engage in a number of activities, particularly in the following fields:

• Education and information
• Youth
• Culture
• Sports
• Environmental protection
• Enhancement of quality of life

Matsudo City – “World Peace City”

In the past, our country has experienced the sadness from an Atom Bomb explosion.
This makes our nation determined that history will not be repeated.
All of us yearn for peace, continue making an effort to create peace, and wish that we all can live in a peaceful environment in the future.

However, presently around the world, international affairs are becoming increasingly tense and cause our citizens great concern.
In response to the present turmoil across the world, Matsudo City now more then ever, willfully observe the peaceful spirit that is the fundamental philosophy of the Japanese Constitution.

We will endeavor to maintain nation wide peace, comply with the three anti-nuclear principles and posses the desire to abolish all nuclear weapons and the accomplishment of permanent peace throughout the world.
Therefore, we now declare our city as the “World Peace City”.

Peace Direct

THEORY OF CHANGE
Peace Direct was born out of a passion to provide local peacebuilders, often risking their lives on the front line of conflict, with the resources they need to carry out their work. But Peace Direct’s own contribution will always be limited. In addition to what we can do on our own, we also need to shift the balance of power and resources in the wider world – towards those who have the deep local knowledge of a conflict and its causes, the moral authority to challenge people to change, and the long-term commitment to fight for peace.

Through our theory of change (below), we integrate our work in finding and funding partners, with our promotion of the concept of local peacebuilding. We demonstrate the viability and impact of local peacebuilding by evaluating our own projects, while showing, through our wider work in promotion, that these are representative of thousands of similar projects across the world.

Insight on Conflict’s blogs, monthly summaries of research and practice in peacebuilding, as well as the increasing traffic to this website, demonstrate a growing recognition of the limitations of externally driven interventions, vital as these may be in some situations, and thus a growing interest from many quarters in local peacebuilding.

The Local First initiative, which we launched with others in 2012, takes the concept of ‘locally led development’ beyond the peacebuilding sector, and suggests practical changes in behaviour that will translate into more effective action on the ground, drawing on our own experience in working with local partners.
